Lemaire Menswear Spring 2019

Because September’s show will be coed, this collection was presented in the showroom. Yet that’s not to say that Christophe Lemaire and Sarah Linh-Tran managed to avoid live feedback on their clothes. “We shot the pictures on the street in Pantin, just outside Paris,” said Lemaire, “and a lot of passersby had something to say. Many people liked the shoes. And this one woman was really excited by the volume and the pleated pants; she said, ‘Ah, it takes me back to the ’80s!’” Pantin’s verdict on the pants and shoes of Lemaire was pretty on the money. The footwear—cute sandals and a new mesh-upper sneaker collab with the sustainable Made in Brazil French brand Veja—was lovable indeed. And the volume in the loose, high pleated pants, especially in the heavier garment-dyed cotton-linen fabrication, reminded me powerfully of those sported by both Bowie and Jagger in the video for “Dancing in the Street.” (Best. Video. Ever.)
