“If they don’t wear it, it’s not fashion,” said Sachin Ahluwalia. He was speaking about a recent return to practicality in the collections he designs with his wife, Babi. Once amongst the preeminent gown-makers in New York, they have now expanded into daywear and cocktail attire, allowing their customers a more easygoing entryway into the Sachin + Babi lifestyle. Since launching a direct-to-consumer business, things have really taken off. Some of their best-selling categories are flowing evening tops, like a tent style with a long train down the back, and fluttery dresses with special details like embroideries or dramatic sleeves. Some of this season’s most eye-catching pieces include a marigold-printed dress with tamped-down fringe and a pair of black-and-white day frocks in an artful floral print. Perhaps because ready-to-wear has been selling so swimmingly, with the Ahluwalias attracting a new, younger demographic, they are also wading back into evening territory. Their jewel-toned gowns are as lush and dramatic as these things come, with princess sleeves and full ball skirts. Most of them are made from corn-based fibers rendering them light as air. Women certainly should give them a whirl.
