Simon Miller is tapping into fashion’s video game obsession for pre-fall 2021. Designer Chelsea Hansford re-created the ’90s classic Super Mario World with a modern California twist, casting Nathalie and Laura Love as dueling “competitors” in her look book. Short of literal Mario and Luigi prints, Hansford’s team drew checkered flags, race cars, and retro auto club logos on scarves, scrunchies, sweats, and terry cloth sets. Her bulldog, Marcel, even made his modeling debut driving a cart and slipping on a banana peel, another motif that appeared on graphic tees and hoodies. Hansford reworked a stretchy performance material from resort into new silhouettes like seamless dresses, bodysuits, and stirrup leggings. They’re essential wardrobe pieces that merge the comfort we crave with a bit of structure, a post-COVID win-win. Ribbed knits, the label’s bread and butter, returned in new matching sets and juicy colors like kiwi and tomato. “You can wash it and you can dry it,” Hansford said of the fabric. “The knees won’t sag, it won’t stretch out, it doesn’t cling to the skin—it’s a really cool fabric.”
